Is the Maya a good regulator for cold water?
The Maya is a sport piston first stage rated to about 40°F (4.4°C), which makes it ideal for warm and temperate water — exactly the conditions you'll dive in Roatán. For cold water or technical diving, choose an environmentally sealed diaphragm first stage like the Monterey or N1 Stealth.
What's the difference between a piston and a diaphragm first stage?
A piston first stage (like the Maya) is simple, robust and delivers strong airflow — great value for warm-water diving. A diaphragm first stage (Monterey, N1) isolates the internals from the water, which makes it easier to environmentally seal for cold or dirty water. Both breathe beautifully in the conditions they're designed for.
